OGX Anti-breakage+ Keratin oil shampoo & conditioner – a chubby deal

This is the first time I have purchased anything from this brand. After hearing good words about this keratin line particularly, I thought I'd try it since I was out of shampoo & conditioner anyway.

The bottles look the same, chubby and pretty nice sturdy plastic. I paid 9.99 € (ca 10.95 USD; 8.44 GBP), which is not too much for a 385 ml 13 US flOz I think. Especially considering a comparably good shampoo and conditioner I have been using most of the time costs me 1.6-2.2 times the price.

First thing said, I have to mention my hair has endured constant coloring and bleaching for about 15+ years; it's long and has thin Nordic hair, which there is quite plenty sticking out of my head. My biggest problems are knots and dryness. So anything that helps me get rid of knotting gets my praise. And surprise-surprise, OGX delivers in that and every other sense! I have used them for three times now and so far so good (let's hope it will continue). I like that when I apply the conditioner my hair smooths out INSTANTLY, like a miracle. I have to work with the knotting tendencies, but there is no conditioner that I know takes away the knots that form in my hair.

I'm not a huge fan of the strong and sweet chemical scent, but it'll fade away and doesn't bother me after I've rinsed it out. Ingredients list reveals it's not the most organic product (as one might assume by the name OGX), but the package is said to be "eco-friendly, manufactured from materials containing recycled post-consumer resins".

One thing I have noticed during this time I have been using this – my hair does NOT get greasy after a day or two like it used to. My hair is dry because of coloring but gets annoyingly dirty/greasy feeling in about two days after washing, but it hasn't happened anymore, and that's great!

THE COMPANY

The company is from Clearwater, Florida, US, but the shampoo and conditioner labels say made in Canada and distributed by OGX LTD United Kingdom. I read from Reuters that Unilever, Henkel, L'Oréal and other companies have submitted first-round bids in the auction for OGX shampoo maker Vogue International LLC. I hope they will not sell the company to become just another pocket for giants swallowing the market. The current owner, Carlyle Group, a buyout company, has invested in many areas across the globe and industries and used to own brands like Philosophy and dr Pepper for instance (both sold for now).
In 2013 OGX settled a class action lawsuit accusing it of misleading customers into thinking its Organix shampoo and personal care products were wholly organic. The company paid $6.5 million into a fund to compensate consumers and changed the brand name to OGX.

Kat von D Lock It Tattoo Foundation

I am a fan of all things long-wearing and waterproof. I love messing with make-up but once I'm out the door I want something low-maintenance – something I can rely on. This foundation is definitely one that makes it to the top in that sense. It is full-coverage, buildable (if you do it little by little), economic, and stays put until you take it off. In case you have dry skin make sure your skin is well moisturized before you start applying foundation (or use a moist blender to apply) – as with all long-wearing foundations and concealers, it tends to make dry patches much more visible. And you gotta work fast before it dries. I mainly use Beauty Blender or my fingers to apply it and I've never had any problems, though.

Unfortunately, as much as I loved it I had to sell it because the lightest shade currently available (Light #46, for pink undertones) is not pale enough for me. Also it looks more yellow/orange when applied on face than straight from the bottle. So be careful - you might want to go a little lighter in shade. I read Kat von D used to have a paler shade (Light #42), which has been out of stock for quite some time now, but should be back in stock this Fall, as mentioned here. I can't wait! Once I have it I will surely do a review on this as well!

The bottle it comes in is pretty awesome in terms of visual design, but I find it to be a little too big for 30 ml – not my first pick when travelling. I do like it has a little cap that will keep it safe & hygienic, but the cap gets lost easily.

I've heard its drugstore dupe is Revlon Colorstay foundation – which I also own, like, and use – but Colorstay #110 Ivory is lighter in shade, and matches me very well. I tried mixing the two, but somehow I was never satisfied. Kat von D is too thick to really blend. I got more streaks while using Revlon, but Revlon one I use is oily/combination version, which might be the culprit here. Kat von D feels a little sticky, but that is also one of the characteristics for long-wearing heavy-duty foundations, I assume, and does not bother me personally (the stickiness is similar to MAC Pro Longwear).

I'm a little disappointed because Kat von D seems to be this edgy rock chic gothic brand, which kinda makes one assume pale goth girls are covered, but sadly not Snow-whites like me. Looking at the shade range it seems there is quite good selection of different kinds of "medium" shades... I don't know how about the darker end of shades, but there is room for a couple of different paler shades there. I really hope Light #42 will be my match.^^ Fingers crossed!

Edit: there is now several new lighter shades, #41 Light for neutral undertones, #42 Light for neutral undertones, #43 Light for warm undertones, #44 Light for cool undertones, #45 Light for neutral and #45 for cool undertones.

Concealers. Swatches and comments

A few words about concealers I have used. On top ^ you can see a swatch that should represent the hues as true as possible (on the other hand, pictures below... not so much).

I've never found me a HG grade concealer, but that might be due to the fact I'm really picky about everything... Or that my problem with undereyes is not so much about dark circles, but more the fact that my eyes are protruding - meaning my eyes will actually cast a shadow in certain light no matter how much concealer there is. However, I'm a fair-skinned lady with bluish-reddish hues under my eyes, and these little erklings can be addressed with specific medicine: a concealer.

Joe Blasco
Red Neutralizer 1

Very well pigmented, covers everything, a little goes a long way and the miniature box lasts for ages! Plus it's easy to carry around in your bag (or pocket) everywhere you go. I'm pale skinned with neutral/cool undertones and I have the lightest of shades, Red Neutralizer no. 1, however, sometimes I wish JB had even lighter and cooler (perhaps slightly more pinkish) tone, but this works nevertheless, and I definitely have no problems with it in the Summertime. I'm not super happy about the staying power – it has an oily texture, which is very easy to blend, buildable, but tends to disappear during the day... And since it is so pigmented you have to be careful not to overdo it, or it will end up in fine lines making you look tired. For me, little cons do not overweigh the pros, and it's still my favourite concealer after many-many years.

Lancome
Effacernes Longue Tenue #01 Beige Pastel

Cool and light toned and matches well with pale skin. Besides being a good concealer I can also use it to highlight my eye area and cheekbones whem I'm in the mood for a little contouring. Claims to be long-wearing and cannot complain about it. Buildable. Haven't noticed any creasing, but it won't last forever and, as if everything, you should still bring a concealer with you when on the go if that bothers you. Squeeze-tube keeps it clean and sanitary, SPF 12 helps to hide you from the Sun.

Laura Mercier
Secret Concealer #1

Bought it when it was all the hype, but after a while I understood it's kinda sticky. On skin you can still feel the stickiness, and I've come across some foundations that have similar kind of stickiness, but these foundations tend to be long-wearing ones and this stickiness appparently is somethig that helps the foundation stay longer. But this concealer makes no promises of being long-wearing (although one cannot complain either) so I don't know what's up with that. The lightest shade looks suspiciously peachy pink in the pan but all good on skin when blended out. It is small and convenient to carry with you, a little goes a long way, and it's well pigmented.

Rimmel
Wake me up Anti-Fatigue Effect + Radiant glow concealer #010 Ivory

I've never bought any drugstore concealers, but this is not bad at all. Can't say it has some magical effects though... It is more liquidy than the Lancome one, but not runny, and with less pigment than those mentioned above. Good choice for an average day when you need some coverage but don't want to waste your more expensive products, for example. Can be used as a substitute for a foundation when in hurry.

Estee Lauder
Double Wear concealer #01 Light

Has SPF 10 which is always welcome, it's long-wearing (and not lying), fairly well pigmented, but a little too orange for pale skinned people – like most EL stuff, I've heard. I can get away with it in the Summer when I have this almost nonexistent tan, but during winter time... no.

YSL
Touche Éclat #1

Forgot to add it to the swatch, but then again it's not really a concealer, although many people use it as one. Instead it's meant to be a brightener or highlighter – for dark circles you should look elsewhere. It does brighten when applied but as with others, the effect is not some greater magic and will fade in time. I don't see what's the hype about it really were (is), and I do think it's too expensive to justify the effect, to be honest.

Conclusion
All these concealers have to be reapplied/touched up during a few hours. I will probably buy Joe Blasco and Lancome again once I run out, but not others. In the drugstore selection I have a few concealers I want to try, but never got my hands on, like Maybelline Age Rewind or Collection 1000, so I cannot really say where Rimmel stands for me. But all of them suit to cover up undereye area as well as any other zits and spots one might have, and have not broke me out yet.

On animal testing and general philosophy...

So far I have somewhat paid attention to corporate links, but not really to brands' animal testing policies. Not enough. But now that I am blogging – that is, talking about and helping maybe people decide where to put their money – meaning – what kind of mindset and world to invest in, in the end – I cannot look past this topic.

In 21st century there is no excuse for companies to test on animals and no reason to buy products from companies that do test on animals, because there are plenty of animal- and environment-friendly alternatives available. Also, first, we should always think what we buy, and do we really need it. There is no point in hoarding stuff we are not going to use, and if you do not use it, consider giving it to someone else.

It can be debated whether grooming products are necessary at all, to what extent, and so on, and the environmental burden cosmetic industry is and as much of a beauty junkie I am, I always think twice before buying something.

We are responsible for our actions. Companies are responsible for their actions and policies and they need to listen to their customers. Nothing speaks (to them) like money does.

Brands testing on animals
So sad to find some of my favourites like Rimmel, Revlon, OPI, Makeup Forever, MAC, Shisheido, Benefit, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Crest, Eucerin, Chanel, Dior, YSL, Sephora, Estee Lauder in this list...

+ Cruelty-free brands
Yay for (example): Anastasia Beverly Hills, TheBalm, Beauty Blender, Couleur Caramel, EcoTools, E.L.F., Everyday Minerals, Hard Candy, Hourglass Cosmetics, Joe Blasco, Kat Von D, Klorane, Liz Earle, Makeup Geek, Manic Panic, NARS, NYX, Paul Mitchell, Physician’s Formula, Sonia Kashuk, Tarte, Too Faced, Urban Decay (the latter owned by L'Oreal but not selling in China).

Talk about hair

I decided to make a review on hair washing poducts, mainly because I just neeeed to share my favourites! To balance it, I add a few words about stuff I didn't like so much...

Davines NouNou

Simply divine. I like Davines' NouNou scent A LOT, it's not "chemical" at at all, it smells like something soft and caring and natural and earthly and fresh... it's a serious mood lifter for me :)

I've tried NouNou shampoo, conditioner and mask. The conditioner and mask have been my long time favourites and life savers. The shampoo is okay, but nothing spectacular - does the job and goes well with other products in the line :) I usually just buy the conditioner or the mask, and shampoo with something cheaper.

One time I accidentally bought MoMo conditioner and unfortunately, this was a total disappointment. MoMo is meant for dry and dehydrated hair (like mine), but for some reason it didn't work at all... So I guess it really depends.

The only thing with Davines is that their conditioners are not travel friendly so if you don't have much room in your luggage you have to find another, more suitable container for travelling. And if you do pack the whole thing, please make sure the lid is properly closed and packed or you it will flood your luggage... On the other hand this kind of design is that you can use up 100% of the product. And the bucket itself may serve you later as a handy thing to put your brushes or plants in or something ;)

Ingredients

Conditioner: Water, cetearyl alcohol, glcerin, cetrimonium chloride, dimethicone, behenyl alcohol, behentrimonium chloride, cetyl alcohol, hydrogenated sweet almond oil, creatine, amodimethicone, dicaprylyl ether, C30-45 alkyl methicone, C30-45 olefin, simmondsia chinensis seed oil (jojoba), lauryl alcohol, rhizobian gum, glyceryl linoleate, disopropyl adipate, glyceryl linolenate, ascorbyl palmitate, solanum lycopersicum (tomato) fruit/leaf/stem extract, tocopherol, lecithin, benzophenone-4, ethylene/propylene/styrene copolymer, hydrogenated palm glycerides citrate, butylenes/ethylene/styrene copolymer, alcohol denat., methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, potassium sorbate, citric acid, CI 19140/ yellow 5, CI 42090/ blue 1, Ci 14700/ red 4, caramel, benzyl salicylate, fragrance.

Mask: Aqua, cetearyl alcohol, glycerin, cetrimonium chloride, dimethicone, behenyl alcohol, behentrimonium chloride, cetyl alcohol, jojoba seed oil, ethylene/propylene/styrene copolymer, butylene/ethylene/styrene copolymer, hydrogenated olive oil, bitter cherry
+ does not test on animals
+ smells good
+ you can get 100% of the product out of the shampoo bottle & conditioner/mask jar
– contains parabens
– contains sulphates

Paul Mitchell

I have tried several of Paul Mitchell products - Original Avapuhi shampoo & conditioner, One shampoo, Detangler conditioner, Extra Body shampoo & conditioner, Platinum Blonde shampoo and their Super Skinny serum. Of these I have to say I loved the Avapuhi shampoo, Original conditioner (both smell like paradise) and Extra Body. I found all these made my hair feel better, softer, shinier and more managable. Extra Body does what it is supposed to - gives volume, and also makes my hair look & feel good, although the volume is only noticeable until the next day (but that is perhaps expected, my hair is very long and straight).

Super Skinny serum used to be a big hit a few years ago when all this hair oils craze started and I used to like it at first but then I discovered I'm using it more for the scent (it smells like sweet paradise) than the effect of it, so I ended up selling it.

+ does not test on animals
+ pretty good amount for the price, middle-range salon grade products
– pretty strong scents to them, you might not like 'em (which is interesting because I do not see parfum/fragnance listed in their ingredients on MakeUpAlley)

– contains parabens
– contains sulphates

Senscience

I have tried Senscience True Hue and Smooth shampoo & conditioner and gotta say they work great. If they weren't so expensive (18-22 € / 250-300 ml) I'd buy them more often.

True Hue
Their web page says it's "a gentle, sulfate free cleansing and conditioning system that prevents color fadage while leaving hair soft, manageable and shiny. True Hue shampoo cleanses away residue with a luxurious lather without stripping the hair of its natural moisture. True Hue conditioner improves the manageability and elasticity of hair, adds softness and slip and imparts a high degree of gloss and sheen while also protecting hair from UV and environmental aggressors."- I can agree with all that :) Kudos for being sulphate-free (y).

Smooth
"Soybean Extract, Silicone and Guar Gum work from the inside out and outside in, bonding to the structure of hair to strengthen and add protection and leaving hair silky smooth, superbly manageable and brilliant. Smooth shampoo cleanses, calms and softens unmanageable hair. Smooth conditioner replenishes and nurtures dried-out hair and restores its healthy, silky smooth texture."

+ does not test on animals
+ sulphate-free (and still lathering well)

Initially, I was going to mention Redken All Soft here which are great products, but after a little research I found out Redken belongs to L'Oreal and THEY TEST ON ANIMALS. Testing on animals is NOT ACCEPTABLE in the 21st century; I am very disappointed and I will not be buying their stuff again >:(

Getting back on track

Very characteristic of me to start something and leave it there after a while - as you can see my last post was in November last year, so it's been about 8 months! I am definitely not the most consistent of bloggers, and to be honest, my obsession with beauty & make-up is as inconsistent as my blogging habits - coming and going as waves. But I'm on the beauty wave again and willing to blog about it (yay)!

I have a bunch of stuff I have been thinking of making reviews on, so there is no shortage of the material at the moment. Also, I spent a small fortune online just these days and I'm really looking forward to when my orders arrive. In case you are wondering what is it I've ordered, here's the current list:
- Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation
- Too Faced Primed and Poreless Pressed Powder Foundation
- Beauty Blender
- IT Cosmetics brow pencil
- Nailtiques Formula 2 + Nailtiques Formula 2 Plus (which I have previously owned & used, will be making a post on these some day)
- Enrapture Amplify Jumbo Hair Waver
- Re-Gen Cream

All these (with the exception of the brow pencil) I have been thinking of getting for a long time now, so nothing was really bought on impulse. Whether these goods prove to be worthy of the money and the wait, will be another story and another post :)

OMG the prettiest nail art ever! Picture from here
I have also been thinking of making video reviews, but after a few trials I understood I have to either practice or leave it there, because I am horrible on screen and I'm not sure would it be better in terms of quality... Since I'm not living alone, making videos is a bit complicated as well (how do you explain people why are you talking to yourself in your room about brushes and sponges? :D) Well, we'll see.

Garnier Olia - first experience & impression

A few days ago I decided to try the new Garnier Olia hair colour and I must admit the results I got were definitely one of the best I've ever got. The hue I used was Very Light Blonde 10.0, and the result was a really nice cold blonde, something I have always searched for!

I have long fine hair that has gone through a lot of bleaching and other chemical treatment for about 15 years. Looking for something to cover up my growing roots, I decided to give Olia a try.

I chose the lightest cool blonde and paid around 7.50 € for a package. One package or long hair is not enough though, I should have definitely have bought two, but managed somehow, because my previous colour and Olia were close enough to not to worry too much anyway.

I have recently been using L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss dyes, mainly because it's ammonia-free - just like Olia - but unlike the latter, Casting Creme is not a permanent, and it's expensive, so I was looking forward to finding something new.

Olia contains no ammonia - meaning it shold be less damaging to hair, and does not smell bad - it has a discreet, flowery scent to it. But be reminded that ammonia-free does not mean this colour is any safer than others. Didn't find ingredients for the exact colour 10.0, but here is an overview for the 9.0: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/product/530311/Garnier_Olia_Oil_Powered_Permanent_Hair_Color%2C_9.0_Light_Blonde/ - beware that reading this might make you want to drop dying altogether... :P

In any case, it is always recommended to do an allergy test before any kind of dying. I didn't, of course, and I have felt a kind of itching on my scalp for these few days after dying, but I cannot tell whether it's the hair dye or something else. I will probably use this hair dye again in the future, but until then, I cannot make any final conclusions. Some users on the net have complained Olia left their hair drizzy or dry - I cannot tell yet, but maybe that's because my hair is always like that.

I understood in some (other?) parts of the world, the package contains a mixing bottle with an applicator, but this was not the case with the package I bought here in Estonia. I had to use my own mixing bowl and applicataor, but for me it's not a big problem since I have 15 years of experience in hair dying :) The gloves in the box, not suprisingly, are not too good (but not the worst, either), but I use my own anyway, so I personally don't really care.

Conclusion

Pros:
+ permanent with no ammonia

smells good
+ cool blonde really is a nice cool blonde
+ not too pricy (7.50 €, where I live)

Cons:

must be applied using a bowl and applicator
possible allergic reaction (but this is probably the case with any hair dyes)
– TESTED ON ANIMALS

IN ESTONIAN

Igal juhul tasub teha allergiatest enne igasugust vĂ€rvimist, see peaks vĂ€hemalt suurema jama pĂ€rast Ă€ra hoidma.

Plussid:

+ ammoniaagivaba pĂŒsivĂ€rv
+ lÔhnab hÀsti
